Donna Brunet - resume highlightsAs a senior at South Terrebonne High School in Bourg, Louisiana, I was fortunate to be accepted into a new photography class funded by a federal grant. We made customized slide shows on a variety of academic subjects requested by teachers in our school district.

Despite original plans to attend a fine art school for photography, following graduation I opted to major in history at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana. I followed that with a M.A. in history from the University of Missouri – Columbia, writing my thesis on Charles Valentine Riley, Missouri State Entomologist in the 1800s. During that time, I worked in the photograph collection at the State Historical Society of Missouri.

After working as a research technician for the waterfowl biologist at the Missouri Department of Conservation, I returned to graduate school for a M.S. in wildlife with a concentration in entomology. As part of a research project on butterfly gardens, I taught approximately 60 individuals in Columbia how to identify butterflies. I began taking butterfly photos since I needed copyright-free images to provide to volunteers.

Suddenly my life-time interests in insects and photography came together. I had no previous experience with macro photography, but I rapidly fell in love with photographing insects. Today, it is rare for me to photograph anything other than insects, although I also have a strong interest in natural abstracts caused by intentional movement of the camera combined with slow shutter speeds.

My images are of free-flying insects taken in the wild with most taken with a 180mm macro lens which provides a 1:1 ratio at a distance of 9”; large butterflies and dragonflies can be photographed from a slightly longer distance. I use fill flash with ambient light as my main light source to prevent the background from being reduced to solid black.

Publication credits include images on permanent installations of information panels at several state and city parks. I have had images published in calendars produced by the Entomological Society of America and the Missouri Department of Conservation. I am in the final stages of completing text and photographs for a new field guide to butterflies and moths for the Missouri Department of Conservation. In addition to my own publishing efforts, I am under contract with Animals Animals / Earth Scenes, a New York stock photography agency.

I hope individuals viewing my images are moved to look more closely at wildlife living in their yards and neighborhoods and that they are inspired to improve the habitat in their yards for insects. A healthy, well-balanced ecosystem in yards requires tolerance of plant-eating insects which can support populations of predators that can keep the insects eating plants at acceptable levels.
